1) Requirements for streaming audio

All that is required to stream audio is a Pentium III or higher PC, with minimum 128Mb RAM, 50Mb disk space, a sound card and a fixed Internet Connection. This can range from Broadband Cable Internet, ADSL, ISDN, or Leased lines. We recommend a Cable Internet connection or a Leased line for best stability. If you do not have one of these connections, we can direct you to a company in your area that can set you up. The advantage would be an Internet connection that's always on, ten times faster than a dial up account, and can be networked, wireless or fixed line for several computers in your office. Refer to www.genesisigroup.com for more details of Internet Connection sharing. (UK Only).

2) How connect audio source to PC

To connect an audio source for streaming live on the Internet, Ensure all sound levels from source and on PC are set to minimum. This is Important! otherwise damage can occur to your PC hardware. Connect the audio source in to the Line in socket (middle socket for standard/stock sound cards) with a 3.5mm audio jack (or as advanced sound cards may require). Set the audio source sound level to a low setting. Adjust the sound levels, Recording, Line in levels on the PC until you can clearly hear the audio comfortably from your PC speakers. The audio performer (the software that streams your audio to our server) also has an audio level to help you set the audio level for broadcasting. Set the Line in level on Output or main to mute if you plan to listen to the broadcast from the same PC.

3) How to set up streaming software (audio performer)

The audio performer is the software you install on the PC with the Internet connection for broadcasting the live audio. Once your set up payment has cleared, you will be e-mailed a link to download the audio performer along with a username and password to authenticate your stream on our server. Once you have downloaded the software, ensure all programs are closed on your PC and execute the downloaded file. You will be taken through a few series of prompts and in a few moments you will be set up. Reboot your machine and then open the software by either clicking the shortcut on your desktop or from the Start > Programs menu.

4) How to stream audio

When you open the audio performer, you will be presented with the following:

Enter the details you received in your welcome e-mail in the boxes as instructed and click continue. The audio performer will connect to our server and present you with the broadcast centre as pictured below:

On the left of the audio performer, you will see the Audience Active Listeners list where you can view who is listening to your broadcast in real time. On the right bottom corner, you will see the codec selector. The GSM 2kbs codec is not sufficient enough in quality for regular broadcasting. This codec is best used at peak periods where you need to increase capacity to allow extra users when your 4kbs listener limit has been reached. Above that is the Audio level monitor and then 'Start/Stop Transmitting button. In the top right corner is the upload settings which you will need to adjust as follows to stream audio to your web page. To start transmitting, click the 'Start Transmitting' button.

5) How do listeners listen to audio (setting up html page)

The welcome e-mail will contain a few lines of code that you can simply cut and paste in to your html web page. This will create a grey applet box which you could design around to effectively design a customised player. The software will also contain a few example page templates for you to use but the IP address will need to be changed to the one we supply. When a listener connects to your web page containing the audio stream, the Java applet downloads on the listeners browser and connects to our server which is receiving your live audio stream. The listener can click the play button and your audio stream is passed through the Internet to the Listener. To add a live playlist and message service from your studio to each listener, please visit the 'Self Care' service offered by our parent company. 'Self Care' can allow you to update information in real time on your web page or customised player without any technical knowledge.

6) No audio is streaming

There could be several reasons why audio is not streaming or the software is not working.

  • check all leads are connected, and audio source is available, and that all sound levels at audio source and PC are correctly set. you can check the audio level monitor to check if audio is getting from source and through the PC to the audio performer
  • is software working correctly? check for error messages at the bottom of audio performer
  • if not, make sure you have the latest version of Microsoft's Virtual Java Machine Installed or reinstall a possible corrupt version
  • download Ms Virtual Java Machine from http://www.microsoft.com/Java/vm/dl_vm40.htm
  • if you have a firewall installed, check settings. Internet Server blocking can prevent broadcasting.
  • check you have entered the correct IP address, username and password and selected 'I am already registered on audio performer login page.
  • check to see if the audio is broadcasting by listening to your own stream.

If you continue to encounter problems, please contact us at

7) The audio performer reads, 'unable to open line: javax.sound.LineUnavailableException:Unexpected'

  • ensure your firewall settings are correct and not blocking the software. (has the software have server rights?)
  • ensure two occurrences of the program are not open
  • download Ms Virtual Java Machine from http://www.microsoft.com/Java/vm/dl_vm40.htm
  • reboot your PC

8) The audio performer reads 'Error, connection refused'

  • ensure your firewall settings are correct and not blocking the software. (has the software have server rights?)
  • check you have entered the correct IP address, username and password and selected 'I am already registered on audio performer login page.

If you continue to encounter problems, please contact us at

9) The sound of the live audio broadcast is distorted

Ensure all sound levels are correctly set. Adjust Audio source or PC recording sound settings. View the audio level by watching the audio level monitor on the audio performer and make sure it is not too high. The best setting is to maintain the audio level between the first and sixth red line at the top end of the audio monitor.
